<p>Recently, I had an email from Angela, a 49 year old reader from Boston with a question about <i>Weight Watchers for women</i>.  Basically, her doctor has recommended the plan several times, but it doesn&#8217;t seem to be giving her the results she expected.  Angela wants to lose weight, but wonders if there isn&#8217;t a plan that is more effective and offers better results.  This is a good question, and one I get fairly often.</p>
<h2 class="h3">Weight Watchers for Women- The Results</h2>
<p><u>Weight Watchers for women</u> has shown varying results from exceptional to not so great.  Some women have had huge success in their efforts to lose weight with the program, while others find that once they stop doing the point system the weight slowly creeps back on.</p>
<p>This is the problem with many plans &#8211; the results are not permanent for some women, and calculating points from now until you&#8217;re an elderly senior is something that seems unfathomable!  It is really hard to stick with any program, regardless of what it is, if you are limited strictly to certain foods or pre-packaged diet foods.</p>
<h3>A Very Positive Aspect of Weight Watchers for Women</h3>
<p>One positive aspect of Weight Watchers for women is that they offer group meetings, which is something very important when your desire is to lose weight.  It&#8217;s not actually the meeting itself that is important, it is the support of others who are in the same situation.</p>
<p>When you have personal and moral support of those around you and you&#8217;re all working toward the same goal, it helps you keep a positive attitude.  You can also exchange ideas and tips to help each other lose weight.</p>
<p>When it comes to something that is life changing, it&#8217;s much easier when you don&#8217;t have to go it alone.  The support of others makes you strong, gives you more willpower, and just makes you feel as if &#8220;we are all in this together.&#8221; So it is a good idea to at least have a pal or buddy to go the distance with you!</p>
<h3>Weight Watchers for Women- The Long-Term Perspective</h3>
<p>Weight Watchers for women, can work well or not so well, just like any other diet plan available today.  Your main focus is to lose weight and keep it off for good, which seems to be the problem with this plan (and most other popular programs) for many women.  Your goal should be to learn how to eat in a healthy way for the rest of your life, not how to count points.</p>
<p>Additionally, Weight Watchers for women can be intimidating, especially when it comes to weighing in.  How much you weigh is really not the focus here; it&#8217;s how you look in your clothes and how you feel about yourself.  One woman can weigh 140 pounds and look plump, while another may weight the same and look very fit and trim.  It&#8217;s all about feeling beautiful and comfortable in your own skin!</p>
<p>What works best for most women is learning what the correct portion sizes are, and knowing how many calories you are eating each day.  While this may take some work in the beginning, you eventually come to know how much food to eat, how many calories it has, etc. &#8211; it&#8217;s almost like second nature once you start on a healthy &#8220;life&#8221; plan.</p>
<p>When you want to lose weight, you have to realize that everyone is different.  This means that Weight Watchers for women may work for one and may not be the right solution for another.  It all boils down to metabolic type, activity level, hormones, stress, how much and when you eat, etc.  Once you have developed a personal plan targeted toward your unique needs, you will lose weight permanently.</p>

A woman over 40 generally has a harder time shedding those extra pounds than she did in her twenties or thirties, but with the right attitude and a few little known secrets it can be done.  Today, women of this age know that life is just beginning; their self confidence is high, they know they are sexy and beautiful, and they aren&#8217;t going to let a few pounds stand in their way!</p>

<p>If you have already reached this age (or perhaps even gone past by a few years,) you know that <u>losing weight at 40</u> is no picnic. <p>Thank-you for your program. My age has caught up to me. I am less energetic or motivated to stay thin. It is on my mind but I am lacking self discipline for one of the first times in my life. My main question is this&#8211;I <u>NEVER feel full</u>. It seems like eating makes me more hungry&#8211;and when I get started then I can&#8217;t stop. Sometimes I believe it would be best if I just didn&#8217;t start eating then I wouldn&#8217;t get as hungry.</p>

<h2 class="h3">Never Feel Full- My Reply and What Will Help You</h2>
<p>Hi Audrey,</p>
<p>It seems that many women after 40 have this same feeling and that they never feel full.  This can obviously cause a weight problem, as when you continue to eat you are putting additional calories and fat into your body.  If you want to lose weight, here are some tips that will help make you feel more satisfied, so that you won&#8217;t continue to eat non-stop.</p>
<p>For women who never feel full, there are some foods that are fibrous and give you a satisfied feeling, so that you don&#8217;t continue to feel hungry. These foods include beans, vegetables, whole grains, oatmeal and some types of cereal.  The reason these foods help curb your hunger is that they provide volume, but take longer to digest, thus making you feel fuller.</p>
<h3>Never Feel Full- Helpful Techniques</h3>
<p>To feel full (or at least fuller) there are a couple of helpful techniques:</p>
<ul>
<li>Drink 2 glasses of water before every meal – or-</li>
<li>Have low-calorie soup before a meal</li>
<li>Get a lot of fiber with the meal (have a salad or low-carb vegetables)</li>
<li>Eat very, very slowly. Chew 30 times before swallowing (digestion begins in the mouth, saliva breaks carbohydrates down)</li>
<li>Eat while being aware of eating- do not do anything else (like watching TV, working or driving)</li>
</ul>
<h3>Never Feel Full- Is it Necessary to Feel Full to the Max Anyway?</h3>
<p>If you never feel full, remember that when you DO feel full, you have probably eaten too much.  People are not supposed to feel absolutely stuffed; women after 40 should feel satisfied, but not so full that you are lethargic or just want to go to sleep.  In order to lose weight, count the calories that comprise your meals and tell yourself that you want to feel satisfied, not stuffed to the gills.</p>
<p>Sometimes people eat simply because they are bored.  They may not be hungry at all, but their lack of something to capture their attention leads them to over eat.  If it seems that you never feel full and you read a book or magazine the entire time you are reading, it is likely because you weren&#8217;t paying attention to your food, so in your mind you doesn&#8217;t realize how much you have eaten.</p>
<h3>Never Feel Full- Night Eating</h3>
<p>This is also true with women after 40; at night, when the kids are in bed and you may be watching a movie, you&#8217;re compelled to <a title="Night Eating" href="http://www.loseweightpermanently.com/nighteating/night-eating/">night eating</a>.  You might eat some popcorn, followed by sweets such as a piece of cake or candy bar.  At these times it seems like you never feel full because you aren&#8217;t really paying attention to what you are doing.  In order to lose weight, consider healthier snacks if you just have to have one, such as a piece of fruit or sliced veggies like celery, cauliflower or broccoli with a low-fat dip.</p>
<p>It is important that you eat 5-6 times a day. If you don’t you’ll feel very hungry when meal time finally arrives, and you’ll feel compelled to eat much more than you want to. Also, if you eat in company (like family dinner, or at a restaurant with friends) do not let their eating habits have an impact on you- particularly for the food you eat, how fast you eat and the overall amount you eat.</p>
<h3>Never Feel Full- Retrain Your Mind</h3>
<p>As humans, we are often &#8220;trained&#8221; to feel full from the time we are small children.  You need to re-train your mind to know that if you never feel full, that&#8217;s how it should be!  When you are, it means that you have put more food into your stomach than it is meant to hold, and it is stretched out.  You should feel satisfied, not miserable and sleepy.</p>
<p>For women after 40 who need to lose weight, it is particularly important that you pay attention to your food at meal time, and even think about the food as it goes in to your stomach.  Once you realize how much you have actually eaten, the simple thought of that food in your stomach will often help you feel satisfied and cause the &#8220;<a title="I Never Feel Full" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Food_Addiction/forum/528801-i-never-feel-full">never feel full</a>&#8221; feeling to disappear.</p>

The answer to that question isn&#8217;t an easy one, as several factors are involved.  Truthfully, you want to look and feel healthy and attractive.  Most women know if they need to lose weight without even looking at a scale!</p>
<p>Women after 40 tend to way a few pounds more than when they were in their twenties and thirties, but that&#8217;s natural &#8211; as long as you haven&#8217;t gained a substantial amount of weight.</p>
<h2 class="h3">Ideal Weight for Women- Factors to Know</h2>
<p>An <u>ideal weight for women</u> depends on whether you have a small frame, a large frame or are average size and height.  Some women are naturally big boned, and will never be a tiny, petite woman.  Muscle compared to fat makes a difference as well, as muscle weighs more than fat does &#8211; but you actually look slimmer if you have good muscle tone, even if you weigh more than a woman with less muscle.</p>
<p>Many women after 40 decide it&#8217;s time to lose weight when they have put on 10 or 15 pounds.  At this stage in life, it&#8217;s very normal to gain about one pound per year if you maintain the same diet.  This means that over 10 years, you will likely gain 10 pounds.</p>
<p>This is NOT a weight problem nor should it be considered obesity &#8211; it&#8217;s just a simple fact of life.  If you do want to shed a few pounds, it&#8217;s fairly simple to accomplish.</p>
<p>The ideal weight for women should also be a weight you feel comfortable with.  You may have an average build, be 5&#8242; 6&#8243; tall, and weigh 150 pounds.  While some might consider this heavy, every woman handles their weight differently, which means you may look slim at that height and weight while someone else looks heavy.</p>
<h3>Ideal Weight for Women- How to Get to It</h3>
<p>If you do decide that you are beginning to look a little pudgy and want to lose weight, there are some things you should do to make it easier; this is particularly true for women after 40.</p>
<ol>
<li>Add exercise that builds a small amount of muscle.  This can be yoga, pilates or light weight-bearing exercise.  You won&#8217;t look like a bodybuilder, but the small amount of muscle you do put on will burn fat and calories due to the increase in metabolism.</li>
<li>Eat foods that burn fat and keep you satisfied, so that you won&#8217;t be inclined to snack on processed foods and those heavy in fat.  Fresh fruits, whole grains, low-fat yogurt, steamed vegetables, fish, foods high in protein and beans (because of the fiber) are all good choices.  Add lots of water and a glass or two of green tea each day.</li>
<li>Get plenty of sleep.  Studies have shown that women after 40 often don&#8217;t sleep as well, due to hormone fluctuations that can cause night sweats and other sleep interruptions.  A full night&#8217;s sleep (7 hours or more) help you lose weight.  Studies have shown that sleep deprivation raises the level of hunger hormones, while decreasing those hormones responsible for making you feel full.</li>
</ol>

<p>What is the most important lesson to be learned here?  To stop worrying about the &#8220;ideal weight for women&#8221; and think more about how you look, how you feel, and how healthy you are. <p>Not only do women over 40 have other beauty issues to deal with; fine lines, crows feet, those first few gray hairs, now it seems that those pounds just keep creeping up.  Don&#8217;t let yourself get discouraged.  There are reasons why this happens, and you can reverse the process!</p>

<p>Add in some good-for-you exercise, and you will find that not only are the pounds beginning to fall off, you feel more energetic and better than ever!  Don&#8217;t look at weight loss as the enemy; simply live a healthy life, and you will realize that the question &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I lose weight at 40 years old&#8221; is one that you no longer ask yourself.  Women over 40, rejoice!  Life is just beginning.</p>
